Hey there coaches and athletes. I’m Michael Hughes, CEO and functional movement specialist here at Gymnazo. And today I’m going to share with you a little bit about my journey, specifically around having the confidence to promote myself as a trainer, and what it can mean for yourself as a trainer as well. But before we get vulnerable here, please don’t forget to subscribe to our channel so we can continue to make great content for you every single week. I’ve been a coach for the past 15 years and be quite frank with you, I still struggle sometimes with promoting myself and tooting my own horn, because it goes against every fiber of my being. And I really value the part of myself that tries to be humble and tries to be successful quietly. So when it comes to having to basically sell myself to people and brag about how great I am, and how I help people better than the vast majority of other practitioners, it gets uncomfortable, even makes me a little uncomfortable right now saying this to you. But it’s especially uncomfortable when I have that little impostor voice in the back of my head saying, Well, can you? Are you sure you’re smart enough to help them out? What if you can’t and what if you fail, even the task of starting this YouTube channel was something that triggered me in a very negative way. Because I knew that it would have to showcase the promotion of how I figured something out, and how I put together even a few more puzzle pieces in someone else. But I also knew I needed to do it. So I could share what I and we have done and have been doing as a company. One of the biggest drivers to overcome that fear is believing that what we have put together simply can’t stay in this little town of San Luis Obispo. It has to be shared, it has to be expressed to those who can take it and continue to change many more athletes and clients lives way faster than traditional methods. I’ve certainly come a long way when I was starting out as a trainer. But I am a big believer that there’s always room to grow and make things more efficient. So it wasn’t until very recently, after doing a little bit more soul searching and inner child healing with this guy right here pictured that I realized I have more to lose than to gain by not promoting myself. Already, I realize it is my responsibility, really as a healer of movement to share what I have to offer to people because people don’t know what they don’t know. But I know that I can help them live a better life. And it took me really diving into what is about promoting myself that makes me uncomfortable. So was asking myself deeper and deeper questions. This limiting belief around competence came up for me because for a long time I associated comments being arrogant, and cocky and egotistical. And I did not want to be seen like that. There are plenty people who come off in this industry like that. And honestly how to fit around people preceding me in that way because it just wasn’t me. And I didn’t want to be misunderstood and have what really is my passion be misinterpreted and mistaken for arrogance. But it took me really sitting with the idea and rewiring my belief to see confidence as a positive thing as something that empowers me and allows me to be respected and actually make an impact in the world. Because let’s be real, would you really want a trainer who is confident about how they know and what they know. Versus someone who’s consistently doubting themselves and playing small and not owning their greatness. I’d probably go with the guy who’s confident, right? Because reality is that confidence is an attractive quality. That whether we’re talking about dating, interviewing for a job or selling a product, people want to work with someone who is confident. So I gracefully accepted my responsibility and reluctantly rewired my belief around confidence. And truthfully, just making that mindset shift has definitely given me that confidence booth. So I’m sharing this all with you because as a trainer, and a movement based healer, you also have that responsibility to uphold. There are too many self promoters in this world right now on YouTube on Instagram on tick tock with the wrong and incomplete education. This industry needs more people like you to start promoting themselves, people needing you to tell them how good you are. They need to feel that you are confident in yourself. So if you’re struggling with confidence and promoting yourself as a trainer, I definitely hear you whether it’s movement knowledge or struggling with or running the business side of things, so how to coach people, there are two big things I can recommend to you doing right now. The first one is doing some inner child work or some other soul focused healing work, because it can really do wonders as has helped me shift quite a few of my blocks and limiting beliefs. And the second is to check out the multi dimensional movement coaching mentorship that we offer, on my team had put a lot of the same knowledge in this course that has helped us build our confidence as movement specialist. Everything from applying principles first thinking around moving biomechanics, coaching different client personality types, creating and systematizing an ecosystem dialing in your programming to run like a clock and all the way to set up your training operations to leverage your time, avoid burnout, and ultimately build a lifelong career as a movement specialists which is very rare in this industry.
