The Vision to Revolutionize the Fitness Industry: An Ode to Coaches and Trainers

Posted on June 5, 2023 Michael Hughes

As a veteran of the fitness industry, the proud owner of a revolutionary functional movement center in San Luis Obispo, and the founder of an online education company for personal trainers, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a fitness business thrive. And the secret isn’t in the equipment we use, or the number of treadmills we have (we actually don’t have any); it’s the people who keep the wheels turning, the heart and soul of our industry — our trainers and coaches.

I’ve long believed that the true key to revolutionizing the fitness industry lies in two vital yet overlooked areas. First, we must empower our coaches to not just manage, but proactively handle movement pain, nipping potential injuries in the bud. Second, and equally important, we must redefine our business models to attract and retain top talent, providing fulfilling, sustainable careers rather than transient, low-wage jobs.

Elevating the Coach, Protecting the Client

In the realm of fitness and personal training, we are not just coaches; we are gatekeepers of our clients’ health and well-being. It is our responsibility to ensure they exercise safely, effectively, and sustainably.

To this end, we must arm our trainers with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize and address movement pain in its earliest stages. This proactive approach can prevent minor discomfort from escalating into debilitating injuries, promoting a healthier training experience and ultimately fostering client trust and loyalty.

Shattering the Low Wage, Burnout Cycle

As fitness professionals, we are no strangers to the challenges of long hours, demanding schedules, and high-pressure environments. Unfortunately, this lifestyle often leads to a vicious cycle of low wages and burnout. It’s time we flipped this narrative.
The longevity and success of any fitness facility hinge on the strength and commitment of its staff. If we want to foster long-term, career-minded trainers, we must create a conducive environment. This means offering higher wages, providing ongoing professional development opportunities, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Recently, we made the bold decision to cut classes on Saturdays at our brick-and-mortar facility. This move was not about reducing services but about preserving the well-being of our dedicated team. We recognize the importance of time off for rest, rejuvenation, and family connections. In lieu of regular classes, we now offer special experience-based sessions and workshops. These are opportunities for our trainers to showcase their unique expertise and earn additional income, creating a win-win situation for all.

Envisioning a New Era for the Fitness Industry

The future of the fitness industry lies in our ability to evolve and grow. To achieve this, we must place the well-being of our trainers and coaches at the forefront, acknowledging their central role in our success and offering them the support, compensation, and work-life balance they deserve.

This approach not only contributes to happier, more dedicated trainers but also results in more satisfied clients and a stronger business model. By doing so, we can revolutionize the fitness industry, creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

By taking these actions, we do more than merely survive — we thrive, setting the gold standard for the fitness industry and serving as an example for others to follow. This is not just a vision; it’s a call to action. Let us reshape the fitness industry together, one coach, one trainer, one facility at a time.
